[04]  QUESTIONS SERVICE-BUSINESS OWNERS ASK

Local SEO for service businesses, answered straight.

Do I need local SEO if I drive to customers instead of having a storefront?
Yes — possibly more than a storefront business does. Google calls you a "service-area business," and your Google Business Profile can hide its address while still ranking in the cities you serve. The catch: service-area businesses compete on the same Maps 3-pack as everyone else but without the proximity boost of a fixed location. That means reviews, GBP categories, and on-page service-area signals matter even more for you.
Should I have a separate page for each city I serve?
Generally yes, but only if each page actually says something different. Google penalizes near-duplicate "Plumber in [City]" pages where you swap one word. A page is worth building when it has the local context — neighborhoods you cover, jobs you've done in that area, the city-specific landmarks or HOAs your customers reference. Five honest city pages beat twenty thin ones. We build them only when there's real content to put on them.
How is local SEO different from regular SEO?
Regular SEO competes for the blue links anywhere in the country. Local SEO competes for the Maps 3-pack and the "near me" results inside your service area. The signals are different: regular SEO rewards backlinks and content depth; local SEO rewards Google Business Profile completeness, review count and recency, NAP consistency across directories, and geographic relevance. You can be strong at one and weak at the other. For a service business, local is what fills the calendar.
What's the single biggest factor in ranking on Google Maps?
A complete, accurate Google Business Profile with the right primary category and service-area definition. Everything else — reviews, citations, on-page SEO — amplifies a GBP that's set up correctly, but no amount of amplification fixes a GBP missing the right category or pointing to a fake address. Step one of every engagement is auditing the GBP. When the GBP is the bottleneck, fixing it alone often moves rankings within 30 to 60 days.
Can I do local SEO myself, or do I really need an agency?
You can absolutely do the basics yourself: claim your GBP, pick the right primary category, ask every customer for a review, and keep your hours current. That's maybe 60% of the value. The remaining 40% — citations across the right directories, schema markup, geo-grid scanning to spot ranking weak zones, on-page optimization for service-area keywords — is where most owners run out of time. Hire an agency when the lost revenue from being slow is greater than the retainer.
How long until I see results from local SEO?
First measurable movement on Maps rankings typically shows in 30 to 60 days after GBP fixes and a review cadence start. Organic-search ranking improvements on competitive keywords take 90 to 180 days because Google needs to crawl, re-evaluate, and re-index your pages. We re-run the geo-grid scan every quarter so you can see the movement on the same map you started with. Anyone promising faster than that is either lying or about to use techniques that will hurt you later.
